Announcing the winners of the CEDAR Awards 2004

CEDAR Award 2004

25 May 2005

CEDAR Audio is pleased to announce the winners of The 2004 CEDAR Awards, which recognise outstanding contributions in the field of audio restoration. Nominations were invited in each of the following categories:

  • CD Remastering from a Modern Recording (post 1949).
  • CD Remastering from a Vintage Recording (pre 1950).
  • Remastering of a Film Soundtrack.

CEDAR's Managing Director, Gordon Reid, explains, "This is the seventh year that CEDAR presented The Awards. As in previous years, it has been a great opportunity to discover projects where CEDAR has been used. We always look forward to receiving the entries, and the winning material demonstrates the variety and quality of work being carried out. Judging was carried out by a panel that was looking for material that had been restored without changing the fundamental nature of the original recording. As in previous years, the quality of the submissions made it a very difficult task to choose just one winner per category. Nonetheless, judging is now complete and we are pleased to announce the winners."

CEDAR also presented an Award to one of its dealers to recognise exceptional performance over the past 12 months.

CD REMASTERING FROM A MODERN RECORDING - POST 1949 Jim Rabchuk, Audiobec (Canada)

Jim Rabchuk, Audiobec: Bye Bye Love - The Everley Brothers

Jim Rabchuk restored this material using his five-board CEDAR for Windows™ system. This includes Declick, Decrackle, NR3, Phase Correction and DNS dialogue noise suppression.

CD REMASTERING FROM A VINTAGE RECORDING - POST 1949 Gilles St-Laurent, Library and Archives Canada

Gilles St-Laurent, Library and Archives Canada: Isabeau s'y promene

Recorded by Joseph Saucier nearly 100 years ago in 1905, this classic French song was restored by Gilles St-Laurent using Declickle, EQ-L, NR-4, Phase Correction and the 2-Channel Tools on his CEDAR Cambridge system. Although impressed with the source material's sonic quality, St-Laurent still needed to remove a variety of unwanted clicks, crackle and general noise. CEDAR Cambridge enabled him to do this without degrading the original material.

POST PRODUCTION OF A FILM SOUNDTRACK Bill Lacey

Bill Lacey, Digital Sound & Picture (USA): Fellini's LA DOLCE VITA - Koch Lorber Films (2004)

Bill Lacey used Declick, Decrackle and NR-3 on his CEDAR for Windows™ system to remove various unwanted background noises from the mono PAL DigiBeta source tape. He said, "Each film soundtrack presents a different series of problems and CEDAR is the only real-time solution that is up to the challenge, and provides the quality that my clients demand. I have been using CEDAR for over ten years on Grammy Award-winning projects such as 'The Heifitz Collection' and other Grammy nominated projects."
